Just got a new toy a 1988 f250 4x4 v8 auto.1 owner died in 08 left to son who is not a mechanic. He took it to friend to fix and fix he did.the fly wheel is in backwards.needless to say the new starter will not turn engine son gets tired of it sitting .l buy the truck tot a song with understanding it had a 351 looking a the air box that is on the driver side says 5.0 don't want to pull intake to see unless I really. A 300 straight 6 is an inline engine. A 351 will take up most of the engine bay. A 5.0 will have a 2 part intake. Google image search each engine to see which best matches
The 5.0 and 5.8 motors will look very similar with a large upper intake portion curving up over the passenger side valve cover and twin throttlebodies positioned vertically towards the front. If you look closely at the upper portion the 5.0 has rectangular shaped ports while the 5.8 is oval, or measure the width of the lower portion between the valve covers, something like 9" is a 5.0 but it'll be about 11" for the 5.8.
If however the motor has a carb style intake with twin throttlebodies positioned horizontally and dead center on a 90deg elbow you have the gas guzzling 7.5(460).
