Hey guys. I read on here that advancing your timing on a 460 will yeild a few more ponies and bettr throttle response. So I hooked uo the ol timing light to my F-250 and... its no where near where it should be... I think. Whats the stock timing on these 460s? Mine appears to be over 20 BTC (not sure of exact number because of rust). And guys are sayin I can run 12*-14* before having to change to 93 octane. Wont that retard my timing? I thought I was suppost to advance it? What am I doin wrong here?
Stock is 10°, should say that somewhere on a emissions sticker under your hood or on your valve cover. That is base timing, checked with the SPOUT connector off. I have seen done posts about timing on this site where guys say to check timing with a vacuum gauge, and put it where you get the most vacuum, not sure what kind of range that would put it in.
Yeah you have to remove the Spout plug to disable computer advance before setting the base timing. The spout is a little grey plug in the TFI(ignition module) wiring which should be hanging of the distributor on your truck.
I cant find my spout. I checked on the internet where its at and mine doesnt seem to have a disconnector or something. So I tried unplugging everything and it wouldnt start. Plugged it all back in and my fuel pump started running lol. Whoops!
Your truck uses a remote mount TFI module located near the driver side hood hinge. The SPOUT is located on the wiring harness leading to it. Here is a drawing from Ryan @oldfuelinjection.com:
Thats a drawing? lol. Looks computerized lol jk. That pic helped a ton! Took me 3 seconds to find it after looking at that pic lol. Turned up my timing to 12*. We will see how she does when I go to work
