I still haven't found the problem he was trying to solve except maybe using 1/2 ply instead of 3/4. I've pulled about 30# of scrap out of this bed so far.
I ain't knocking the guy mind. he found something to do with all those extra washer we all wind up with. They were stacked 6 deep in the bed corners.

He may have been related to the PO of my '52. I found some very strange things, like a trans crossmember that had 1 bolt in the trans and was resting on the frame rails. No bolts, no weld. And many others...
I'm pretty lucky really. everything else has been really well preserved. that cross member you describe... that was my worst nightmare when I was looking for a truck.
