Hey guy, new to the forum and diesel trucks for that matter. I bought a 91 F350 from a fellow the other day. Got it to tow my Jeep with occasionally. Well, here's where my story begins. After starting it the other day i noticed it was making a very loud noise. a few minutes go buy and i still cant figure out what the noise is. i then realize my key is stuck in the start position (insert cuss word!) I rotate the key back to the run position and the noise obviously goes away and home i go. now today i go to start it and, clunk, no engine turn over. just one single clunk every time i try to start it. So i figure i fried my starter or ground some teeth off it. I climb under the truck, remove the wires from the starter, take out the two bottom bolts, and that's as far as i've gotten. I cant get that top bolt out to save my life. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also, does it sound like a starter problem or something else. I know this is my first post and i'm a newb so thanks in advance and hopefully the flaming will be kept to a minimum
Put a 15/16ths socket on the crankshaft pulley with a breaker bar and see if you can turn the engine over by hand. The truck needs to be in neutral. Starters don't usually seize. If you can turn it over by hand, long extensions and universals are the key to getting the starter top bolt.
welcome to FTE.
lots of extensions and patience are required to remove the top starter bolt. then once it is out it is a snap to put back in once you know how to do it.
My preferred way to pull a starter is to sit up inside the wheel well. Turn the wheel all the way to the left and you should be able to crawl in behind it and sit up, as long as it's a 4x4. I'm 6'1" and I can do it.
A six inch and a 3 inch extension should do the trick.
nothing i have really found on these motors to be a metric size which is great cause i been workin on my cousins truck which are chevys and well they are mixed and a pain in my *** but i will tell you from experience that it does help to have a wobble and about a 10 in. extension. the most important thing though is the patience because if you dont have that then you will cry. i got pissed to the point i did lol. depends on the day and how much your pissed on weather or not you want to work on it
