So the time has come to start preparing for the modernization of my truck. I'm stuck between the choice of a 351 windsor with a healthy .505/.498 lift cam and a m5r2, oooorrrr a 460 big block with a healthy cam and a zf 5 speed? Anybody with these combos got any good stories or recommendations? also what gear should i run? I want a good driver not daily, as i have two vehicles (2004 mustang gt), and have a lot of pep when i wanna lay into it and powershift the hell out of it. thanks for reading.
Forgot to mention its a 1978 f100 stepside short bed. Very light truck actually. Also i'm not really worried about gas mileage. but as i have figured out even if you have a big motor it doesnt mean bad gas mileage. Me and my dad have a 1960 falcon with a 428 cobra jet and a 4 speed and it gets 25 mpg lol. Believe it or not.
I'd go bang for the buck... 460 and ZF5.... an easy +450 hp engine for around $2000 with the right parts combination. Go to PowerblockTV.come and search for Horsepower's episode #404.
I will definately look at that when I get home. I think big block its gunna be. My papaw can build em to turn high rpms and make serious torque. He built one for the race truck where building. It's a 429 4 bolt block (lol we have like 6 of em) which ill probably use one but it has a lunatic can, forged pistons, roller rockers, and papaw takes it to 7000 all day everyday!!! It's wicked. Plus the whole frame twists even with it being boxed and the motor anchored on top.
