I am looking at little cheap things to do to my 2000 Ex 7.3 and I had someone suggest a muffler delete. Its all stock and I plan on eventually doing a 4'' down the road when I got that kind of coin. I am not really expecting to gain anything by doing this, pretty much removing the semi rusted out muffler. Would I be doing any harm by running a straight pipe stock exhaust? I am good with gassers but this is my first diesel so im still learning. Does the 7.3 need alot of back pressure to start in the cold (once the snow flies)? The truck currently has just under 277,000 mi on it, and I just dont want to cause damage to anything by doing this. I rarely tow with it (maybe 7k once or twice a year) and I dont drive it hard.
Nope you will be fine. I have been running straight piped for almost 5 years now. No issues. The turbo provides all the back pressure you will ever need. I plow and tow a decent amount with mine.
I too am following this. I want a 4" exhaust but have been wondering if deleting the muffler would buy me any lower EGTs. HK, did you notice any lower temps when you deleted yours?

You might see a little drop. But its not much. An exhaust is like $400 kid. That's pretty cheap and you gotta do it eventually
I know they are around 400 but my overtime got cut so 400.00 is alot right now lol What is a quality brand that I wont have to worry about all the salt eating it away during winter? Oh and im cheap to begin with
I did notice a drop but like Princess (Andrew) said, it wasn't a lot, maybe 100 degrees when towing, but that's enough. What you will notice, like it or not, is a very noticeable difference in sound. I really liked it especially in the beginning. I was always rolling the windows down when next to a semi or going under bridges. It is much louder. Some like it (me) and some don't (some of my neighbors).
I've been thinking about the same thing. I even looked into the Aero Turbine muffler as a cheap band aid before biting the bullet and getting a 4". I am good friends with a local shop that wont give me any bs. He recommended waiting for the full 4" exhaust. Personally i'm looking for a quiter free flow exhaust without the stupid drone sound. He recommended a Flow Pro Turbo down kit. A lot of guys on here have the MBRP from RiffRaff.
The first thing I did when I bought my truck was to go down to the local exhaust shop and have them get me a chunk of pipe then I went home and cut the muffler off. I did notice a small increase in power. It sounds good too.
I got my 4" MBRP for $230 so I couldn't pass that up.
