I have decided to change the front end on my 53 F100. I plan on ordering the complete mustang II IFS kit from total cost involved, since I have all the original suspension, drum brakes and manual steering and its cheaper to order the whole thing than part by part. So I was wondering if anyone else out there has done this, what all was involved, if it was all bolt on or if you had to do anything to the frame involving welding, or whatever else had to be done.
THANKS
Welcome to the forum! I commend you on your decision to make the suspension swap. When it's done you'll have a very nice riding and handling truck. Just understand doing a MII changeout is not an overnight success story. It takes some careful measuring and planning to do it right, and if you don't have any experience with custom welding and fabrication, I highly suggest you seek professional help. It's not rocket science, but it's easy to make a mess out of things if you're not careful.
I'm not going to write a step by step procedure for you here. There have been countless books, magazine articles, and posts here on this forum and others on the subject. To do it again would be a waste of time. A google search for Mustang II suspension installation will probably yield you a thousand stories. But to answer your basic question, yes, there is welding and cutting and measuring involved. I'd recommend getting the instructions from TCI before you purchase the kit so you have a better idea of what you're getting into.
Best of luck with your project. Keep us posted on your progress.
Thanks for the info, I hadn't planned on doing a complete change until I found out that a power rack and pinion kit wouldn't work with a 3'' drop axle, or so they say. But it needs to be done because any little bump it hits, it jumps allover the place. I figure I can sell the drop axle, spindles, ect.
I couldn't find any info on installation from TCI but i did from Fatman, go figure. You mentioned magazines and sure enough I found a custom classic truck issue that was just what I needed.
Thank you so much for the input!
