I have a whistle (may be a squeel, but sounds more like a whistle) that is getting more and more annoying. It is loudest when it is cold but is getting more constant all the time. It is loudest at startup. The pitch never changes but the volume increases as the RPM's go up. It stops momentarily on shifts.
Any ideas?

There is a service bulletin out about this. I believe Ford refers to it as a "honking" sound. It is actually a resonance vibration in the small hose coming out of the bottom of the plastic intake junction that has the "air horns" molded into it. This resonance also causes the idle speed to fluctuate as it affects the Idle air control or Idlae air motor. Ford will sell you a replcement bypass hose with a molded-in expansion chamber to cure the resonance and a new IAC to solve the wandering idle. I removed and cleaned the entire intake tubing from the box to the throttle plate (do not attempt to clean the throttle plate area unless you have the proper cleaner, it is coated with a special finish). Remove the IAC and thoroughly clean it with carb cleaner from a spray can. These things removed about 90% of the problem and made the remaining 10% a nothing issue. If this doesn't work for you, then go to the Ford dealer and have them look up the service bulletin and get you the new bypass hose with molde-in expansion chamber.
Thanks, Jim. What kind of special cleaner do you need for that throttle plate? I hope we are talking about the same problem. My whistle is very high pitched and I would never consider it a "honk" sound.
