A few months ago I would periodically hear a "pop" from the front end. Most of the time when doing a slow turn or backing. As I just had completed a V/B swap I focused on that. I never could find anything wrong/loose. It seemed to go away for awhile but now has returned. I put the truck back up in the air. Checked sway bar links/mounts, ball joints, shocks, and hub bearings. Still no luck. A mechanic friend suggested bad shock. In the last two days it had really increased in frequency. This morning I was looking around as I was at work and I noticed that the steering link bar from the box to the passenger side arm was movable by hand. How much play should this have?
Any other suggestions? Got a big trip planned pulling the trailer coming up very soon and I need to get this fixed fast so that its safe.
When you say moveable by hand, you're referring to you can twist it back and forth (roll it)? That's normal. If you can move it side to side or front to back, that's not normal.
Is your front end greased up good? Low grease will cause a pop. I'd get a helper and check the front again, except this time, instead of jacking up the front end, turn the wheels right and left with the tires on the ground (some cardboard under the tires helps). You need to watch what's happening with the weight of the truck on the suspension.
Well, I got it figured out. Thanks for the help, but it was very simple. Tomorrow, I will be going into town and getting some longer sway bar link bolts with some nylon locking nuts, because no matter how much I tighten them down they are loosening up anyhow. Simple and Cheap. Not like my normal vehicle problems.
