Truck and mods in signature. I’ve had the truck nearly 6 years and never had a problem. Only on occasion do I get what feels like a slight miss at low RPM (1500 or less) but it’s never been consistent so I never worried about it. This morning cruising at 55 and it shut off like you threw a switch. Pulled over cranked a few times and nothing. On the last crank it ‘felt’ like it wanted to start, and the tach would jump indicating some RPM. I let it set about 30 minutes and it cranked right up. Drove about another 3-4 miles and it shut off again. Left it and rode to work with a buddy. So, since I get tach indication that would eliminate CPS as the problem, correct? I just changed oil (Rotella T6) last week. Level is full. After doing a little searching I’m leaning toward IPR. No, I don’t have a scan gauge or access to AE. Not thinking it’s the ICP since it’s a problem of just dying outta the blue, rather than a hard start. It was dark and I had no time to do roadside trouble shooting so I didn’t pop hood yet. No smell of oil or indication that the HPOP blew. Any other thoughts appreciated.
Dies like you threw a switch is usually electrical / sensor related. Check the tin nut on the IPR. Check the wiring to the IPR and ICP. Check the wiring below and behind the 42 pin connector. Chaffed wires in those locations can cause a stall if they short to ground.
Also consider the CPS. You did see some tach movement, but you also got it to start again. Did all the dash lights function normally when you would crank with a no start?
Well, it seemed all the 'normal' lights came on when attempting the restart. The only thing that caught my eye (and maybe it's normal) was the red battery light was the only indicator I noticed lit up after it died. But, since it cranked at normal speed and otherwise seemed normal I thought nothing of it.
No CEL or other lights remained lit after restart.
Just started it after sitting 12 hrs. Started right up, drove about 5 miles 'wheezed' once or twice, CEL came on for a sec then died, no restart. Waited about 30 minutes, restarted but romped about 6-7 times real hard then smoothed out. Drove it onto my trailer. Got home started right up drove it off the trailer.
At least it's out front and I can get to it as weather and work allow.
Sounds like CPS to me, the 1st time mine gave me trouble it would shut off like you turned the key off then restart & run good for a week or two then do it again.
Okay got the CPS swapped. It had a black one in it, presumed original, that was a booger to get out. The O-Ring was totally flattened and cracking. I replaced it with the handy grey spare in the glove box and just put 20 miles and about 35 minutes of driving without a hiccup. That more than doubles how far it would travel prior to the CPS swap. Anyway just wanted to close the loop on this issue. Looks like problem solved.
