trouble with accelerating

I have a 2003 ford expedition with a 5.4 v8. On occasion when i merged into traffic and i floored the gas, the RPM's will jump high but the vehicle isnt really moving any faster. I have to let off the gas and accelerate at about half gas pedal so it will pick up speed. Any ideas?

It should be done every 30,000 miles.
