Jim, my wife just retired from 35 years teaching in Indiana. She taught first grade for 25 years and the last year they moved her to 3rd grade just to teach the state test. That is all they want kids to do is pass state test to get scores up for more fed. money. Kids do not learn things they need to know to survive in normal day to day life. The Feds need to get their azz out of education and let teachers teach. Sorry for the rant but I am so pissed off at the no child left behind it is not funny. No physical education and they wonder why the obesity problem is so bad plus the crap food they serve and call it school lunch. Jeep
I live way south of Jim, and here they push that damn OGT, and you test for it in 10th grade and pre test for it in 9th. They act like its hard and ****, and the funny thing is we were sent to clssrooms in alphabetical order. The teacher over my group said we couldnt turn in our test for 2 hours. Well she reemed me cause I would be done in a hour or hour and a half and the 'College Prep' kids were still working, well when the scores came back near the end of the year I tookt he paper and showed her and said 'I may look like a dumb country boy, but I can do most this simple crap in my sleep' Its pathetic...
My daughter will be starting Kindergarten at the end of August, and she is required to have a CALCULATOR when she comes to class.
That surprised me too, but what bothers me the most about public grade school is that writing skills are no longer an issue. Life is so centered around a keyboard and touch pad now that no body even cares to teach our kids how to write legibly.
Ofcourse we see that all the time on ths board when theeese kids come on here and fire away with there hoorible speelling and sentense fragmants and run ons that just never end they just keep going on and on and nobody can ever figur our just what the heck anybuddy is trying 2 say......
We don't home school, but my kids have homework even when they don't have homework. Not knowing how to spell, write, add or use punctuation is not acceptable in my house.

I don't know if we did, but they do now. Basic addition and subtraction. My AP second grader was doing basic algebra last year. At this rate she'll be doing fractal algorithms and quantum mechanics by high school. At least that is my hope lol.

Lol, that's funny right there!
What you're talking about is really the key. Parents getting involved in their kids schooling. I know that home schooling is not for everybody. It is a huge commitment of time, money and energy. Not all families are in a position to be able to do that, be it due to finances or the personalities and family dynamics involved. The thing that matters is that the parents take responsibility for the education of their kids. The degree to which this is possible varies, but the key is that they have to take ownership of their kids education. If parents would just get involved and give a rip about their kids it would make a huge difference in so many aspects. Too many, it seems, just seem to think that their kids' education is the responsibility of "the professionals" and they don't think they have any part in it. People just need to realize how great a responsibility we have for the next generation of this country. We all want to complain about how things are, but we are responsible for how they WILL BE in just a few short years.

I can remember getting called to the principal's office when my daughter was in kindergarten. They were sitting around tables in groups sharing crayons coloring pictures. The teacher said it was time to pass the crayons and change colors, but my daughter wasn't done coloring one piece with that color so she kept coloring to try and finish. The little boy next to her got tired of waiting so he reached out and grabbed the crayon from her hand.
So she hit him. The boy started crying, my phone rang, and then I got to try and keep a straight face while this principal explained to me how my daughter hit some boy for stealing her crayon. As the protective father type worried about boys, that made me feel pretty good.
The thing that matters is that the parents take responsibility for the education of their kids.
I think it's simpler than that..... If they would just pay a little bit of attention it would make a big difference. We have a program called watch dog dads in our elementary system. When I do it I can tell pretty easily which kids have a stable home life and which don't. The ones without generally cling to me like monkeys on a climbing tree during recess.

My English Comp 2 professor a couple of years ago told me something similar to that. I had written a few papers and gotten fairly ill towards the end of the semester. I asked him if my grade would be okay even though I missed a lot of class time and didn't finish my final paper completely. His reply was "Honestly, I hate to say it, but your writing is actually quite good, and I have people in this class who can't even properly form a sentence. You don't have anything to worry about." Pretty sad that one could make it as far as Comp 2 in college and not be able to complete a proper sentence.

Counselors will put kids in classes to push them forward.
I ran into this in college.
I qualified for a higher level English class which was 102 IIRC, but my counselor wouldn't put me in it. (she was my neighbor/friend too!)
So she put me in the lower one. I was pissed cause there were idiots around the school in the higher level one cause they just asked their counselor to put them in it.
They didn't qualify for it, so they shouldn't be there.
The funny thing is, I wrote in an advanced writing format and screwed the teacher up. She had no clue wtf I had done.
This was her first class she was teaching though.
I missed 2 weeks of class, she thought I was the trouble maker. She was really nice to me when I came back when she found out I wasn't the one disturbing class all the time.
It's a hugely long story, but basically my daughter was born Aug 4, and the school districts cut-off to be 5 yrs old is Aug 1, and we went through he.l.l getting here enrolled this year. Even though the state says "Age 5 by Sept 3".
She's been in daycare/preschool 2 days a week since she was 2. She knows all her letters, can do basic reading, do basic math, counts in english, spanish and some french and japanese all from daycare/preschool 2 days a week! But we do work with her a lot, too, especially now that my wife is home full time. We finally had a special meeting with the school's administer guy and after the test he said she's at the level of 1/2 through first grade! To think they insisted that we wait another year...
If she would not have made it into K she would have been bored to death next year and would have slowed down her learning, no doubt.
Our formal orientation is next month, but I have heard some really strange things about schooling these days. Like no focus on handwriting whatsoever.
My wife and I are certainly not leaving her education up to the schools, that's for sure.
Well the school district I went too, after I graduated went to the 'College Grading Scale' you know 100-90 is a A, 90-80 is a B, etc etc. Well my cousin, was talking up about how smart her daughter was, cause she was on the honor roll. Well mom brought up 'Jesse would have been on the honor roll to if they dumb'd down the grading scale on him too!' Anymore they are doing anything and everything they can to push kids threw and to make it look like they got high test scores so they can get more money in school grants, which they dont use for the classrooms they use it for the athletics department...
Talking about athletics. There was a teacher who got 'Dismissed' cause he wouldn't change the grade for one of the football stars at the school.
