I have an older boat with a Chevy 4.3l in it. I need a new head on one side. I see eBay has several. My question is: what is the difference in casting numbers? Do I need to match up what I have on there? Or does it not matter? They also list years? Isn't a V6 a V6 or are they different?
Do you have a local head shop? They can match them for you and rebuild another one for you. You do want to match the compression. That is where the heads can be different. Also the the valves could may be different lengths. Marine engines might be based on Chevy but not all the parts are Chevy. They do low bid on all the components.
I have run across this many times in the marine world. If you go to a head shop make sure to tell them it is marine they are a little different in some cases.
