The BOSS engines are hemi headed. I have no clue what the casting numbers are.

Yes, the 429 BOSS heads came as "hemi" but were not totally hemispherical. They are known as the Blue cresent because of the cresent shape. And were only made for the Boss 429's specifically and were aluminum material also. But were only made in 1970 to 1971. The boss engine was only made to be for racing purposes.

actually they were only made in 69 and 70 not 71 at all. And approx 1359 of those engines ended up in mustangs, and 2 ended up in cougars of which only one is still accounted for, and as far as the last time I heard Ford still owned it.

FYI, you can put on Boss 429 cyl. heads on 460 block's but some mod's are need to be done ! If ya have the money C&C in Manassas can set you up . He bought the mold's from Ford , Boss 429 block's & head's he sells turn key Engines or part's. All block & heads are alum. though mostly racing engine's.

there is lots of places that make blocks that can accept Boss style heads, and actually I believe AR owns the original Boss heads and made racing versions of them starting in around 72 or 73, plus a version of them can still be bought from ford motorsport with the designation of A441. I am not entirely sure but I believe there is another company that sells them also but a little hard to come by.
As far as blocks you can use the RDI alum block or the AR alum block I believe the IDT block can be setup to run original boss heads also and I know the A460 block from FRPP also has the priority main oiling system that is required to use them on that block.
As far as putting original Boss 9 heads on other factory blocks, your right you have to do a lot of mods that flat isn't worth the effort, first you must plumb a oil line to each head (you cannot modify the block to accept this) and you must also make an external oil return line since they don't return the oil the same way to the pan. plus the standard, and CJ blocks do not use a priority main oiling system and are drilled completely differnt form the Boss block, so it's actually a waste of a good set of heads.

A few months ago, Hot Rod/Car Craft or one of the other rags did a "Boss 429" buildup using some old Nascar Boss heads and put them on a regular block. While informative, the article was pretty much a joke. They bought a blown set of heads and had somebody weld on them for over a week to get them back into shape. They then made some oil lines to get this setup to work. At that part of the article, I was mildly interested in what they were doing. About that time (after spending many thousands of dollars on the head work) they limited the displacement to 429 cubic inches. Why they didn't take the heads and put them on something with more cubes was beyond me. Anyway, you are right. Putting these heads on a regular 385 block is cost prohibitive. I'm really surprised the aftermarket has not kicked in (affordably priced, that is) and made the boss head and blocks available. This is one area that Ford has turned their back on too, even though they had some AR pieces listed in their motorsport catalog quite a few years ago.

You guys are ignoring the first Ford "Hemi" engine. The 427 SOHC motor, 616 horsepower at 7000 rpm and 515 lb-ft of torque at 3800 rpm with a single 4 barrel carb. The 2X4s version was stronger. This was back in the '60s.
