I have a 04 E450 with a 6.0 in it. Recently lost power and took it to the shop and they first said the trans. was bad, then said the exhaust was clogged, then said it needs an entire new engine. I pulled it from shop and found info on here about the turbos getting carboned up. So I removed the turbo and found the unison ring rusted to the housing. Before I just clean this thing up and reinstall I have three questions. (1) How much side to side play should there be on the compressor side turbine shaft?, I can move it a little side to side, I would say maybe .010 to .020 . (2) I also have a little sticky oil residue in the compressor side, is this normal? (3) Can the shaft bearings be replaced with out any special tools or fixtures ? The turbine blades look good on both sides. Any info is appreciated. Thanks
What is the mileage of this vehicle? Some radial play is considered normal, but side to side play is not. The oil residue you speak of, is normal crankcase ventilation residue. What does the unison ring cam slot look like? Is the oval slot "kidney bean" shaped? If it is, replace it. If play is excessive, you would be better off replacing the center housing rotating assembly.
WOW!!! So this truck has sat during most of its 9 year existence? That turbo must be really carboned up. I'd hate to imagine what the EGR passages in the intake and EGR cooler look like. Cubevans are the worst offenders for carboning up.
Not a lot of carbon like i thought, it was more rusted to housing. I just found a rebuild kit on here from riffraff . Does the turbo shaft run on bearings or brass bushings?
P.S. Dont be sorrey you bought it there great trucks its hard on them to sit need to be driven occassionaly
Stuck turbo veins with trucks that sit is very common Hell it happened to a bunch of them from just sitting in the car lot
Run truck occasionaly and after it gets to normal temp give it some WOT runs to make the turbo veins Move this keeps veins from seizing up. I do a few WOT Runs 1or 2 times a week usually on a hill this makes veins move fulley and Knock on wood I have never had a turbo issue
then with this is over get you a ScanGaugeII to monitor the vitals of the truck dash gauges suck theres a few things to watch
But there Great trucks stay on maintenance and work it hard occasionally
The tolerance is measured in axial play (in and out) and there should be no more than .091mm (0.0036in) for endplay (as Mike said). The radial play tolerance is 0.5mm (0.02in)
