WELL I have 1981 Ford Bronco 300 Inline Six. I am moving the family about 250 miles mostly highway. Any advise on what to test, check and make sure things are working so it will make it the ENTIRE trip unlike when I brought it down here. This time I am hauling a 6x12 enclosed trailer. 9" rear with a 6" lift should be good. I will be taking it easy 55 60 most of the way I will go.
Since then I replaced the carb, new ICM, new coil, going to replace the Radiator it has a crack in it. Although I am going to try to beat the heat and leave 6 7 am not just for the truck but for me NO A/C.
I am thinking of trouble shooting why my water temp or oil pressure gauges don't work. Starting at the sending units working my way back to the instrument cluster Pin 10 for the oil pressure? I think I will look but if right off the top of your head you can tell me which pins the oil and water go to that would be great. Should I just get some aftermarket gauges ?
That was a lot...... any advise is VERY welcomed..I got AAA just in case I hope I don't have to use it.
Oh but today it kinda stumbled on me getting out on the highway just going down the highway I didn't press the gas or anything just kinda started to loose. I haven't drove it in a few days. So I pumped the gas pedel a couple times to start it up it started right up. so only when I started down the road it stumbled on me I drove it at 55 60 MPH for about 25 miles and no problem at all.
I saw nothing about a fuel filter. But it wouldn't hurt to replace it before a big trip. I agree that some basic aftermarket gauges will be far better.
Any advise one the aftermarket gauges. Ones that look somewhat streamline. I would like put some back in the instrument cluster but not sure if that will work. I guess I could get some square ones somewhere? Or should I forget that and mount a a trio on the pilliar.
Under the dash is a popular spot. Autometers are real nice but can be spendy. The pillar would be a good spot if you get the piece.
Putting gauges into the factory cluster can be tricky since you wont find any that are a perfect fit (square). I'm sure its been done to great success tho. Might have more luck finding pics on FSB if thats the route you'd like to go.

Edge,
Ya the A pilliar is a good spot for me I kinda like them there.
Ya why doesn't anyone make replacement aftermarket square gauges.lol
Ya that is a project I DO want to do down the road just a lot of fabing some aluminum and a lot of wiring. I am sure it is more then that but I want ot try.
For now I want to know my oil pressure and water temp for the time being.
I am not sure if the advance sunpro gauges Buy Sunpro Black Face Triple Gauge Kit CP8218 at Advance Auto Parts are worth spending $40 on. Better then over heating the engine or burning up the piston rings i suppose.
you have the best engine for that trip. stop halfway and check everything, you should be good to go. oh,yeah-check tire pressures before you leave, with this hot weather
rustyred,
Thanks man I like the poor mans diesel a lot.
Ya I had planned on doing that maybe twice. It is good I dont have any oil leaks just working on getting the water temp and oil pressure working at least. Good call on the tire pressure.
Since you don't have A/C, you don't have the vents on the left and right side of the instrument cluster. Those big, open spaces are great for gauges if you don't mind cutting holes in your dash.
For what its worth, I've put 40,000 miles on my '81 I6 Bronco since I first got it in 2004.
Aside from a vapor lock issue (which just required waiting), it's only left me on the side of the road one time during all those miles when the alternator died. I have to give it credit though, it was on a 300 mile trip through the windy mountains of central Idaho (middle of nowhere) and it died 10 miles from my destination. Close enough for my brother to come get me.
How's your battery? Alternator? Charging system? Is your gas tank venting correctly? (If not, the heat can cause you problems).
As for the gauge in the dash situation this is how my temp gauge is mounted. I hate it. But mainly cause i have 2 of them now and neither work. I want to mount a tach there instead, i just have to figure out why the stock one isn't working.
