I want to change the pinion/gear ratio of my F350 dually ´94, but it seems as if there are two different pinions, one with 31 splines and one with 35 splines. Any possibility to check w/o removing the driveshaft and counting the splines? Axle is a 12 bolt, that should be Sterling 10.25?
I cannot recall off the top of my head, but the dana 80 may be what you have. They look very different. The 80 cover is diamond shaped, and the 10.25 cover is very square in shape. A quick google image search will show you.
Where are you getting the information on your ring and pinion from? There should only be a 31 spline pinion for the sterling. Both long pinion and short pinion as well as the later 10.5 are all 31 spline.
Im sure it is a 10.25 with long pinion and I found in my garage an old OEM gear/pinion from an other 10.25 axle and it has 31 splines. That´s for sure. But in internet/ ebay there should be 35. Even at the site of "USA Standard Gear" they say 35. And that´s what I´m worrying about. I really cant imagine there are some with 35.
My money is that they are referring to the axle spline count, which is 35 splines. That is in their 'details' section on the 10.25. Now, you notice there are not individual part numbers for 31 or 35 spline pinions in there list of ring and pinion sets? Also, Superior Axle and Gear has no listing either for a 35 spline pinion.
As a side note, have you researched the quality of ring and pinion manufacturers? In a heavy duty truck such as yours, I would think twice about putting in a 'cheaper' ring and pinion just to save a few bucks.
