tuners/code readers

I was looking around and saw many code readers/tuners. For my 2000 f250, what would give me the most bang for my buck? I saw an edge 15000 that seemed fairly cheap, but, I just don't know enough to know if it would be a good buy. Will a unit like that allow me to enable my doors to unlock with a remote or they just for adjusting performance and reading codes. It seems as if buying one of these things means I don't need a "chip". Is that right? I originally was thinking a cheap code reader to troubleshoot my truck in the future, but, when I saw the potential capabilities of the tuner/code reader...it kinda' excited me. Am I off track? Please set me straight. These trucks are wonderfully sophisticated and I'm not, yet. Before I retired I was and electronics tech and would like to learn more about how to deal with my truck. I retired early and am not as well off as I'd like to be...but, I hated my job so much and am so glad not to be there.

Well, I did what I should have done in the first place searched the forum. It seems ae is the way to go. More than I wanted to spend, but, I guess you get what you pay for...so, I ordered one.

AE is the way to go. Did you order it from Clay?

Before you buy a tuner/chip, you will need to have gauges, intake and exhaust. You've been on here long enough to know we don't care much for the off the shelf tuners. Ask before you buy. These guys know what works for our trucks.

I ordered it from riff raff. Is that Clay? I've installed egt and 6637. Have to wait to do the exhaust and a chip, if I need it, until I get caught up on some of my spending.

Thanks for the hi...while your scanner is pricey to me, I can see it's miles above the others and for what it seems to do, well worth the money. I was going to go on the cheap because I've been spending money like I had some...but, I could see it would be money wasted if I didn't get what I needed. So, thanks for a great deal. I guess there will be documentation to enable me to take advantage of the capabilities of the device. I guess having a chip enables one to store and switch between several programs, huh? Still trying to wrap my head around the technology of this truck.

Hi lartross, I am an electronics tech (among all my other unofficial titles) and you won't regret getting the AE. There is one issue, the instructions for the device are for controlling the AE. They have zero documentation for the vehicle because it works on hundreds of models and they don't have that info. I will PM a little care package.

Save your money. Wrap your head around the truck, it's like any other electromechanical device and it's not that tough to figure out, once you grasp how some of the key components function. Injectors will jam you up for a while, but it'll click like anything else. What I've learned (abridged): Get the stock truck to 100% before upgrades! Once you've got a lock on the engine and you've read the fine advice from the Brotherhood, you can roll into the adventures of modding without shot-gunning the green.
