Can anybody help me, I have a 1987 F-150 with the dual tank set up, I need to replace the fuel pump and gas gauge setup on both tanks. Is this extremely difficult to do, or should I just take it in and get it fixed (which I don't really want to do if I don't have to). Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

This thread has been moved from Garage and Workshop Tips forum where we share ideas about how to organize tools, heat the shop, or free that rusty bolt. Unfortunately no truck tech questions are allowed there.
Please take the time to read the headings and notices in each forum. The FTE board is HUGE! We want users to be able to find answers to their questions so it is organized into many areas and search tools are provided.

all you have to do is drop the straps holding the tanks and disconnect the filler tube. then unhook the pump, if i recall correctly there is a wireing harness and 2 fuel lines that are connected to the pump.
most of it is common sense stuff, just be sure to tighten the filler tube down really well so u don't get leaks
I think we've been through this before, but.. ..wouldn't it be easier to move the bed itself? a couple of ground straps and what... 8 bolts? then if there's gas in the tank (like there is in mine) you can get to the top of it........ dunno. haven't gotten to there yet.
There's also some wiring to the taillights that's attached to the bed, but not much. I guess it boils down to: do you want to heft a ~120lb gas tank (if it's full) or a ~300-400lb bed? You can get the tank down to ~30lb if you run/siphon it down, but the bed will ALWAYS be 6' wide, 6-8' long, and 3' deep.
Get your squad to help. Work smart and take the bed off. Instead of lifting weights, get 4 of them to lift off the bed, do your thing with the sending units/fuel pumps while standing up, and then have them lift the bed back on.
Before they get there ice down a case of beer! And don't forget to tell the quack what yer doing so he can prepare for the inevitable rusty metal cuts. We just love adding entries to yer shot records.
Since we're on the subject, and although I know we've been through this before, and I hate to bring it up again, but is the sending unit available separate from the pump itself or not? About two days ago, I was in the parts section of the dealership and they once again told me that it's not. However, I remember reading here that someone(s) said they had bought the sending unit separate, and I'm trying to figure out if they guys there just don't know crap, or if it's true. TIA for any help.
Replaced my front fuel pump today. Took about 2 hours start to finish, dropped it from the bottom. It would have taken less time but I had a hard time getting one of the fuel lines off the tank.
Luke,
The Ford dealer told me that you have to purchase the pump and the sending unit together becuase they come as a unit.
Also has anyone seen those adjustable fuel level floats they sell in JC Whitney that are supposed to work with your existing original fuel gauges?? Do they work?? They are only $16.
