It sounds like you have a completely different issue than before. The first problem was boil over after stop and go traffic. The new problem is the gauge showing hot when driving, with no actual boil over. It sounds like all the previous boil overs ruined your temp sending unit. I can't help with locating your sending unit on the engine, but I think you are on the right track.
By the way, are you using a factory service manual? If not, that may be why the diagram is wrong.
At some point, I think they stopped using the regular temp sensor for the gauige, and rely on the CHT (cylinder head temp) sensor only. Check out if you have a CHT.
My experience with those aftermarket manuals is that they don't cover year to year changes. They are OK for very general repairs, but not so good for detailed things.

I agree, everything I can find indicates a CHT sensor. I don't know where it is, but you can trace any wires near the cylinder heads and should find it.
Okay so i have located it. I had one of the books in my car. Problems is that in order to remove it the book says i have to remove intake manifold to access it. I want to make sure before i do all this work. It did do it job yesterday when the truck said it was hot. It turned off half the cyclinders. Also would a scan tool give me a code and tell me if this is the problem. What is a good scan tool that i can buy. I am on a lower enlisted budget lol..

If your truck is throwing a code, the check light will be on. You can go to most auto parts stores and have them check the code for you.
I definitely remember the "lower enlisted budget" woes.
No auto shop on base? Used to pay a dollar an hour to rent a bay and do our own work. I think I went in at $600 a month as e-2. My son is E-3 and makes what e-9 made when I was in.
Mine was showing overheating only when i pulled my trailer. I did t-stat at 180 and then back to factory spec of 195. I did water pump. I did new radiator. I did new sensor at t-stat and cht. I washed the ac coil as it is in front of the radiator. I did new belt and still no change. I added an electric fan in front of ac coil. Then I figured out what everyone is talking about with the whooshing sound or jet taking off noise from the fan. Mine made it in the mornings when first fired up so I thought my fan was good. I took it to shop and they said fan was good. (That was somewhere in the middle of replacing all these parts.) Then I said what the heck and replaced the fan clutch. During these summer months here in sac, CA we get some hot weather and my fan kicks in when the ac is on at almost every stop light! It reminds me of a garbage truck in the mornings. It is very noticeable. If you listen to big trucks leaving stop lights from now on you will here it. I did the ford test for the clutch fan and all said ok. But now I can hear it working. Clutch fan is cheap in comparison to all this other stuff. Mine never spit water out though. It went into survival mode alot though. Even shut me down twice on the way home from mammoth to sac. Hope this helps. Clutch fan is super easy if you buy the tool from napa and grind it to fit our fans.
I got my clutch fan from Napa. Not sure how much but I get a pretty good discount. Also the test requires several things. Like splash of paint on a blade and timing light or strob light. Stupid test. You should hear it run. The rpms do not match the sound you hear. Not sure how else to describe it. Mine ran today at lights and it is not real hot out but I had ac running. Even if yours is bad it should be loud at first start in morning. That same sound should happen when running ac during the day when warm out.
When towing my 10k travel trailer now the fan clutch hits and runs going toward tahoe. That is 7k foot climb in 60 miles or so. just to give you some numbers. These engines run 4500 rpm going uphill no problem but drink fuel when doing it. My clutch fan never made noise until I put the new one on. If you haven't heard it you will with new clutch. It is like loud obnoxious rock!!
