'68 Ford Noob Needs Help

Good Morning!

I have a manual on order so I can figure this issue out - but it hasn't arrived yet so I am turning here for some help if anyone can help me.

I'm new to the classic truck scene - I bought this last year for $1500 and it ran pretty well. I put in a new carburetor, kill switch and air filter (took the old oil air cleaner out, which I kept).

I have been having problems starting - usually I just needed a jump, but now I can't start it at all. I was having problems starting the truck when it was hot or had run for a while. Our temperature here has been well over 100 everyday for the last week or two.

I spoke with a friend who races (on the phone) and he thought I a sluggish starter and that I should start by replacing that (the battery is new and good).

Here is the problem - I can't find the starter under the hood to replace it. There is a captive discharge ignition - I have never worked with one of these before. I know there has to be a starter somewhere - but the new starter I bought doesn't look like anything under the hood.

I have done some repair work to newer cars - 80's and beyond, but nothing like this.

Any help, tips or thoughts anyone can offer would be much appreciated.

Sorry for such a basic question.

Feel free to email if you want me to email you some pics under the hood.

Get on your back, slide under the truck just behind the right front tire. When you get in about a foot or so look up. That black cylinder shaped thingy with a battery cable attached to it is the starter. If you need to jack the truck up to do this make sure you properly support it with jack stands. Never trust a jack to support a vehicle.

When is the last time you did a tune up? Change your sparks, wires, dist. cap, rotor, points, condenser? Does it makes any noises when you try and start it?

Check all your grounds and make sure you have all good clean connections and a battery that has been tested good. Ford starters hate high resistance and bad batterys.

Thanks!

Thank you all so much for the help!

Changing the starter went pretty quickly and the truck fired right up.

elgemcdlf - It was very easy to find with those directions. The swap went quickly and easily.

Flytyer24 - There was no noise when I tried to start it up. I did a pretty complete tune up when I bought the truck last year in October. That went well, and then I rebuilt the carburetor and put the kill switch in. I hadn't had any problems until now.

willowbilly3 - Thanks for the heads up on these trucks hating high resistance. That is good to know.

I'm sure I'll be back on here soon needing some help with something else. I'll post some pics soon as well.

It seems awkward, but whenever you "insert a picture" to one of these threads, the forum is looking for the picture somewhere on the web (which is always available) rather than from somewhere on your hard drive (which isn't always available).

Go to Image hosting, free photo sharing & video sharing at Photobucket and sign up for a free account. Then create an album for your truck. Upload any pics you want to post on FTE to that album. Have this album open on your computer when you want to post pics on FTE.

While you're making a post on FTE, select the pic you want to post from your Photobucket album. When the large version of the pic is open, right mouse click on it and select "View Image Info". The image info will be highlighted and will look something like this:
http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...ghtsafter1.jpg

Copy that highlighted info (right click / copy).

When you have the spot in your post where you want the pic to be placed, select the "Insert Image" icon at the top of the post (looks like a mountain) and paste (right click / paste) the image info you copied in the highlighted box (just shows "http://" when it opens).

Your pic will be placed in the post.

Hope that helps.
