Starting Questions

Hi, I have a '70 Ford F-100 with a 300 I6 out of a '77 Ford. I am trying to get this thing going, and I have replaced the usual stuff: battery, starter soleniod, cap & rotor, wires, plugs, and coil. Well alot of people have tried to rig it up before I got my hands on it. So I'm going through and trying to find/correct some stuff. While starting it spins real slow and "pauses" often. I don't think it is the battery, because I've had it for about a year and in another project, and it's always cranked fine . But the wire from the starter soleniod to the starter also get VERY hot while cranking, One time it even was smoking I'm only 16 and not real experienced with Fords , mostly Bowties. I have an old Chilton's manual I'm reading and going by. I just can't figure out why it's spinning so slow, it will spin about 2 or 3 times fast then slow down. I know the carb needs rebuilt, but I'm just dumping Berryman's B-12 down it to see if i can get somekindof fire out of her. Thanks for any suggestions

sounds like your starter is going out, drawing to many amps thats prob why its getting hot. im 16 two check my truck out, but take your starter into auto parts store and have them check it and tell me how that works out

goodluck

Make sure ALL the cable connections are clean- scrub them with a wire brush- battery posts and terminals, terminals at the solenoid, terminal at the starter, and the terminal at the engine block for the ground. Remember- just because it "looks" clean doesn't mean that it's making good contact.

Good Luck-

Joe

Thank you guys, I'll clean all the connections, and if that doesn't fix it I'll pull the starter and make a run to the parts house. I talked to my uncle after I posted and he listened and also said the starter might be about to crap out. I have to say I like the 6 banger, it won't be any problem gettin the starter off if need be, LOTS of rom under the hood, I can get in there and stand next to it on the drivers side, guess I can test the passenger side tomarrow

P.S. - I fixed up my gallery thing, if it works, have a look at my ride

good lookin truck man. im 17 and fixed up mine and had alot of fun. take a look.
instead of buying a new starter at first, try an old one or something. alot of ford starters will work on your truck. thats what i did on my truck. much cheaper

Well, today I was going to pull the starter for my trip afterschool to the parts store. Well I decided to start with the bottom bolt ( only see 2 on there ). So I jacked it up some to give me some working room, and got under it with a socket, it rounded off. It didn't really suprise me so I just grabbed the ChannelLocks, and it rounded off even more . Well I got the big #10 Visegrips after it then and clamped on, and it still wouldn't turn at all . So I squirted it down with Marvel Mystery Oil to try and loosen it up any. I'm lettin it soak in until tomarrow afternoon. Then I'll try it again.

idealtrucks - Dude, your truck is sweet, I like the wheels and mirrors. I was wanting to find some mirrors like that for mine, and maybe some newer Ford wheels like you have. I was either thinking new Spoke type like those on the back currently, or newer Ford wheels. I'll have to discuss it with my uncle since we are 1/2 owners in this deal. But 1st priority is to get it running!

Yea should've used a 6 pt. O well I know next time. I think I'm just going to go ahead and get a new starter, only $22.99 with a 1 year warranty. Trying to keep cost to a bare minimum, since I don't have a job

benshultz4x4 - I checked out your truck, looks good, that's why I can't have a 4x4, stuck too much

thanks man.
i know what you mean about keepin it to a bare minumum on prices. i fixed mine up with the money i made mowing yards through the summer. got most of the parts at a junkyard and did all the work myself. got it painted at the local tech school for just the price of the paint.

Yea, I'm functioning off my mowing profits from this summer, starting to run dry. Mowing isn't so hot this time of year. This old Ford is going to haul my mowers and weedeaters around, so I'm trying to stay with the new, cheaper parts, just so hopefully it won't strand me anywhere I help my neighbor and another guy that mow on the side and we have a cemetery that is 30 min. one way, so I need it to be dependable enough to get me there and back.

Be aware that "re-built" starters have a very high failure rate right out of the box. Testing one on the bench without a load may look like it is ok. Put it back on the truck and it doesn't work. I had that happen once.
