Is there a trick to removing the oil cooler from the housing or do I just have to beat on it harder? I have the nuts partially on the two studs and hitting them pretty hard with a hammer and I don't really want to hit them any harder for fear of making an expensive mistake. HELP PLEASE!
Nuts come all they way off first. Pound on the cooler where the fittings come through the cover. One of them is recessed so you'll need a socket or somthing to reach it. Cooler cover is sitting on a couple of 2x4 scraps.
Here's a good video. Cooler is coming out at about the 4:00min mark if you don't want to watch the whole thing. 6.0 Liter Powerstroke - EGR and Oil Cooler Replacement - YouTube
The 2X4 are a must. I want to say it's a 17mm socket that offers the best return on impact...but I've slept since I did mine. I used a shot filled mallet and a couple of whacks and the old cooler came right out.
