460 questions

I have access to a 460 out of a 95 f350. Im in the planning stages of a hot rod pickup build i wanna do and wanted to know if this is a decent engine to use. If i wanted to get some decent power out of it , like the 400hp range, how much money would i be looking at and what types of things would i be looking at changing and upgrading?

Tons of drag racers use the 460. Its a good starting point! A stock 460 only makes about 300 horses. Thats still quite a bit, even by todays standards, but with the large drag racer aftermarket, you should be able to get there depending on how much moo-lah you wanna spend

By "about 300", you mean 245 HP. The EFI engines made good torque, but had terrible heads, exhaust, and cam. If you want to stick with EFI, hitting 400HP is a little tricky. You'd have to get the stock heads re-worked (ported, bigger valves, etc..) use EFI specific exhaust and find someone who is capable of tuning the computer.

If you're switching to carb, then it's no issue. Check this thread out: 460 Horsepower Chart (revised 1/24/09) - 460 Ford Forum

more important question is how much are you willing to spend and do you want to keep it EFI or carbed?

that is going to determine how much hp you are going to make more then how much hp can i get.

400hp from a carbed 460 is pretty simple with the right selection of parts and stock components. even 500hp with modified stock heads is achievable with the right work and parts. anything over this you are better off to start looking at aftermarket heads and a stroker kit. then the sky is the limit as long as you are willing to spend some money.
people are making over 1000hp with the stock blocks as long as they are prepped correctly (of course we are talking mega bucks for this type of hp)
so first off you should set a realistic budget that you are willing to spend (be realistic also, $500 is not even going to get you a decent rebuild of stock, 400hp is going to be in the $2500 - $3500 range minimum, with the price escalating from there. decent aftermarket heads are min $2000 to $3500 depending on hp you are shooting for).

so set a budget and go from there first.

The project im planning on doing is gonna be a very long term project. Basically im willing to spend whatever i need to to get to the horsepower i want. If 400 is gonna take 2500, then im willing to spend that. But i dont wanna spend more than i need to.

Very well said. Sums it up right there lol. If its a long term project and a "build it as the money comes" then your already at a good starting point. Most guys seem to think they can build a tire roastin monster on a small budget... Theres no such thing lol. Like stated above, A good set of heads will cost ya more than the trucks worth. A stroker rotating assembly will cost similar.

Good luck and build it right! Keep a build thread on it!
