Hey everybody, I usually lurk over in the '80-'86 section, but now have a question for you.
A guy at work has a '94 F-150 that he just did a 351w transplant to. He wants to change the rear gears, but has never done it on a 8.8, so I offered my services to help.
Question is, what trans is in the truck and more importantly, what are the gear ratios for first through fifth gears?
The trans in question is the stock one in a '94 F-150 4x4 5-speed that originally had the 300-6 in it.
I know this is very vague, but it's all I have to go from, as I can't get over there in the next week to read the tag. Did Ford use more than one trans behind the 300s?
If you change the gears you better know what ou are doing. If you do not set the backlash correctly with some kind of an indicatator you will be replaing gears again.
The 5-speed manual in an F150 is the Mazda M5OD, gear ratios are as follows...
1st 3.91
2nd 2.24
3rd 1.49
4th 1.0
5th 0.80
Exactly what I was looking for, thanks.
I have set up gears in 8.8, 7.5, 9-inch, and dana 44 fronts. Have all the tools and indicators to set up pinion depths, backlash and wear patterns. Have done many, many gear changes with no problems at all. Thanks for the info though.
The truck is up and running. He doesn't drive it much right now because he's unhappy with the gearing, which we will resolved soon.

Ford in thier wisdom equipped many of these I6 trucks with lincoln towncar gear ratios.. 3.08 and even 2.73, and that's fine for cruising around on level ground and getting good gas milage except that this is a truck that is meant for hauling things and many of these trucks have a lot of hills to climb. The farm tractor like 300 will never be mistaken for a hotrod motor but with an OD ratio in the trans performance and usefullness is greatly improved with 3.55 gears for example and gas milage doesn't suffer much if at all. Of course that's with stock sized tires, if they're larger then scale up the gear ratio appropriately.
I believe he's got the good 'ol 2.73s in there now, and probably open too. I was kind of leaning at putting 3.55s in there, but I'll have to talk to him about tires too. He did say he was thinking about a lift kit in the future, with taller tires (35s). If that's the case, a set of 4.11s may be more up his alley.
