I went to the pick a part and found a light for under the hood in pretty good shape wire and all, the question is how does it turn off wen you close the hood,I knottiest on the right hing me standing in front of truck there is a hole just in front of the hing and it looks like something was there do you guys think its where the switch gos if not how do you turn it off.
Thanks guys looking forward to illuminating my engine compartment.
Thanks ND I went ahead and google the info you gave me and daaaaaaaaa I had the hole thing that I need. Its the same as the one I took off because I thought it did not work but the truth is I had no idea how it worked,Got it installed and working now. But its insane the price the ask for a used one between $149 t0 $195 that is crazy good thing I asked about the switch.
If its not them it's LMC... I have been trying to stick more to Carpenter but honestly the last order of his stuff was mostly China too... May have been ford tooling but China made.
I am adding this just so no one pays $150 for a used light... There are other options even if all the NOS listed above get scooped up. Personally, I would go there first, but this is option 2.
Thanks bradTX for the info.I already installed the one I took off and its working the truth is I did not know that the little cylinder inside the socket is the mercury switch, thats why I asked, I thought I needed some kind of mechanical switch to tun it off using the hinge or the hood, kinda like the doors, but now I understand how it works.
Screw light assembly to hood the hood is grounded,
Connect wire to the battery with in line fuse and your done.
Hood goes up mercury makes the circuit complete light turns on,
Hood goes down mercury cuts the circuit light turns off.
Thanks Again Hope This Helps Someone Like Me That Doesn't Understand How This Light Works.
Mercury is a liquid metal that rolls back and forth completing the circuit

.. and nowadays mercury is considered a hazardous material.
Btw, I recall 90s Cutlass Supremes (and other similar GMs) had a neat little underhood puck light with a retractable power cord..... with a manual power switch.
