I have an 86 F150 4-speed with 302. When the clutch is let out all or most of the way I get a bit of a squeal. This happens in neutral and through most of the gears. The first 2 inches of clutch pedal travel don't seem to do anything and the clutch engages pretty close to the floor. If I push the pedal in just a little, it stops.
Could this be the throwout bearing or (hopefully) just some kind of adjustment? This is just a bus station vehicle and I don't want to spend a bunch of $$$$$.
If it is just the throwout bearing, it is just as much work to change it as to do a whole clutch job, which it sounds like it needs. Start saving your money.
Start saving! You probably have a hydraulic clutch so there is no adjustment. You can probably live with it for awhile but sooner or later your gonna have to bite the bullet and just do it and you would be crazy not to put a clutch kit in while your there. They are fairly cheap at Carquest and it seems to be a good clutch, new not reman.
does it make the noise with the clutch all the way out and the truck in gear?
Or does it only make the noise with the clutch in.
The first would be pilot bearing the second would be throwout bearing. See if you can find a friend or something that knows cars. It is often more of a chatter, almost a grinding noise when these bearings go out.
You can crawl under your truck and see if it havs an inspection plate on the bottom front of the tranny. If it does you can take it off and possibly inspect of even grease you throw-out bearing.
Thanks for the info everyone. That's what I get for buying a truck for $1000. Didn't make one noise when I bought it, a week later it squeals like a dying turkey.
In response to the question:
The squeaking comes and goes when in gear. Seems loudest in 3rd and intermittent in 4th. If I push the clutch in slightly it goes away. Also seems to lessen if I give it more throttle.
The same goes for when its in neutral.
