yet another question. I have wondered about this for a while, you know those neon lighting tubes you can buy at walmart that plug into your ashtray, can you cut that ashtray attachment off and just put in a switch that will turn them on? if you can , can anyone explain how it is done? thanks
I dont know about a switch but wal-marts around here sell a control unit that lets you hook up at least three lights and control em all from one spot. I have em in my truck and it works great I think the control was around 20$ and the lights were 10 each.
If you need help with the wirering of that u can go to radio shack and get the switch and they will show u how to hook it up. It is very simple and radio shack will have all the connectors you will need. I would tap into a blank spot on the fuse box and put a switch some where and hook it up that way.
Ive never tried that with the wal mart neons but I have done it with street glow neons. All you have to do is cut off the end, pull the 2 wires appart, strip the ends, then bring all of the positive wires together (ones usualy with white stripe in them is the positive one but if the dont have the stripe dont worry about it). On the positive and negative wire nut them together with a piece of wire then going from the ground to a grounding point and one from positive to a switch and one from a constant (cigerate lighter) to the other side of the switch and then you got light. Also I dont reccomend using walmart neons because they will break easily and the color is sorta off. I reccomend using Street Glow Neons that Summit Racing sells those are the best neons out there the even have a lifetime warrenty.
Not trying to start anything but Ive got three of the walmart neons in my truck and my friend has 4 in his car and neither one of us has had any trouble with them breaking. The only problem I have had is one fo my three doesnt respond exactly the same as the other two but I put it in the back and you cant notice it now. Besides for the price of one of the street glows you could buy a couple of the walmart ones.
I dont have anything against the walmart neons ether its just when iI had some in my car I broke 4 of them because I had a nearly 2000 watt subwoofer set up and the low viberation broke them. A couple of my friends at school have them and they havent had any problems with them but they dont have a defening stereo ether. The only reason I went to Street Glow is because a gurentee.
hmm...ya...im not gunna get into a pissing match about weather street glow or wally world neons are better and if a "2000w system" can break em...anyway...heres a brief how to:
Tools u'll need:
Fire extinusier (gotta think safety first)
Wire cutter/stripper/crimpers
Switch
Neon(s)
Terminal connectos (to connect the wire to the switch)
first disconnect the positive battery terminal. easiest thing to do it simply cut the ciggarette adaptor end off and hard wire it. after doing that, pull the wire apart and cut to the lenght u need (cut about a foot longer so u have some slack incase u F up) thentake the wire with the stripe on it (thats ur positive) and run it to a switch (get one from Radio Shack, Wal-Mart, Auto Zone...whereever u want). wire the switch as explained on the pakage(usually just take the connectors and crimp the wire and slide it over the spade on the switch). then run the wire to a blank spot on the fuse panel and use a 5amp fuse. then run the other wire to a designated ground (like where u grounded the CD player, but dont use that particual spot). turn switch on and enjoy
a few tips: save the wire u cut off from the cig. adaptor to reuse for other wiring.
Hey monster where were the lights? were they in the box or really close cuz I was thinking of putting something like that in mine. if they were inside how did you adjust the sensitivity on em? does it go low enough to still work?
only way u can use them inside is if u use a plexis glass panel or use cheap *** bandpass box. u can adjust the sensitivity but even down all the way it wont flash to well.
I had the walmart neons in the trunk of my car I had them set up so it would light up the subs realy nice with the trunk open but when it was closed they were only 4" to 6" away from the subs and they were directly fired uppon. (I think it would have abbout killed any neon and the outside of my car sounded like it was gong to fall appart) it probaly just rattled them apart internaly. I never tries my street Glows back there but they were on the inside of my car and I never had a problem. You could monut some on your box and it probaly wont hert them since the box doesnt vibrate. The best way to put a neon inside of a bandpass box is to mount it in the area that you see through the lexan and put a box terminal on the outside of the box and run the power from the rest of the neons or hook the positive to the remote turn on on your amp and it will come on when ever the amp is on (it wont flash unless you have a neon tht does or you have a control box) I hope this helps you guys out.
