Hey guys, finally going to make a move on a 4x4 conversion on my truck. I have researched plenty on this and have a good engine with only 60,000 on it in the truck and selling mine to buy a 4x4 is NOT an option.
Anyways I found a 1990 F150 4x4 302 V8 5.0 on Craigslist. It's an extended cab long box. The guy said it's a manual shift transfer case, automatic transmission, manual locking hubs. He only wants $500 for it, engine has issues, drivetrain is good.
My truck is a Standard cab F150, 302 V8 5.0, Auto transmission, 2wd obviously.
I assume a 1990 F150 with an automatic transmission would be an AOD tranny, right? Don't think the E40D's were around then. The only problem I could see with this is the rear driveshaft length, I would need it shortened, right?
I would imagine the front driveshaft would be the correct length?
It's iffy on which trans. My 90 with 351 is an e4od. I have an 89 with 351 that's an aod. Both are 4x4. Your 2wd truck is an aod right.
Maybe the 90 with 302 is an aod also and it would be a sweet swap. Front driveshaft will bolt in. Rear will need to be custom fit unless you buy one.
The truck is an hour from here, so I can't look at it. Would hate to make a second trip to go pick the thing up. Is an extended cab 4x4 F150's transmission any different in length than a Standard Cab 4x4 F150 transmission? Say they were both AOD's....
I know 2wd and 4wd trannys are different lengths.
If they are the same then I could just buy a rear driveshaft off a F150 from the Junkyard, instead of paying to have the driveshaft modified, which I would assume would cost more.
Yup. The front driveshaft will bolt right in.
And also yes. Find a 4x4 truck with body config that you have with aod and the rear driveshaft will work.
All the 4x4 aod trans are the same length. No worries about xcab and reg cab trans. They are the same.
It would take some work. But you can buy a 4x4 AOD output shaft, and tear down your current AOD and put the 4x4 output shaft in. www.wittrans.com sells AOD 4x4 output shafts for $50.
Sweet! Just found out from the guy that the tranny pan has 14 bolts, meaning it's an AOD.
Looks like this truck is perfect to convert mine to 4x4. Tear out the driveline, and sell the rest. Maybe I'll break even.

Hey Rebel, Just saw your post. I would probably do that if I knew how to tear down a tranny, lol.
Its all good. Thats what I did, cuz I have a great AOD tans I just rebuilt. Also just be careful you're no looking at a AODE, I don't know when it came out, but it has the same pan and most parts as a AOD.

What is an obvious way to determine whether this is an AOD or an AODE?
I have an AOD in my '92 2wd, and the 'Overdrive' gear is selected via shifting into it.
I would imagine on an AODE, it would be the Push Button overdrive at the end of the Shifter?
Thanks
P.S. mainly opting for going with the 4x4 Tranny because it only has 101K on it. My 2wd Tranny has almost 200K on it.
Aode and 4r70 are not the same. Some internals are compatible but not all.
Progression was
Aod
Aode
4r70
From no electronics to all electronics.
The Aode really just uses electronics to engage overdrive that way you have 1-2-D(OD off button on dash) on the shifter VS 1-D-OD on aod where you really didn't have 2nd gear (unless you shift from 1 to D and immediately back to 1 to lock in 2nd)
4r70 has electronic pressure control and 3 solenoid packs for OD and converter lockup and something else.
