A4ld

I been hearing that A4LD is a bad tranny. i have a 89 bronco II 2.9L with a blown A4LD tranny and was wondering if i should rebuild it or get a different type of tranny like a c4 or something like that.

The A4LD is the weakest of the overdrive trannys. I am not sure what other trannys are available for the 2.9. There are some upgraded parts available from later models that will improve the lifespan. I went thru 2 of them in an 89 Aerostar. The second rebuild, they installed better upgraded parts and it is still going today. Ford also used the A4LD in the Turbo Coupe T-Birds. Why, I'll never know. They put their weakest tranny behind 200hp engines and expected them to last. Well, they didn't. I have had a few of these that needed trannys. You should be ok by getting a quality rebuild with the updated parts.

There are various versions of the A4LD, the most robust being the ones used behind the 4.0L engines from '91 on. The internal components are stronger than those used in earlier years.
