Knocking in rear (9"/mini-spool)

I have noticed that I have a knocking sound coming from the rear (I am assuming - I put it on stands and put it in gear but no noise) so it could be anything. Anyway, any ideas as to what it might be? I put the mini-spool in about a month ago and haven't driven it more than 100 miles since. The noise sounds kind of like a hammer hitting your axle housing. The only thing inside the axle that could make that noise is the pin that goes through the spool, if the cotter pin broke, could possibly slide back and forth.

I only notice the noise at speeds above 15 mph and while going straight - so no binding on the spool. Does it wether or not I am cruising, accelerating or coasting.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

I get the same noise/feel when my yoke gets dry.
I have to remove the driveshaft/yoke assy and apply ford teflon grease to the seal and the splines.....a lot of grease.

Jack up the rear end, disconnect the drive line and turn the tires over and over real slow. It will probably feel like it is binding up. You could have a broken tooth on you ring. I would tear it about to find out. when it makes the noise does the rear end hang up for a second?

No, there is no change in the way it feels, just the sound. If it was a tooth, it would do it all of the time, right? It doesn't do it all of the time. I don't think it has a broken tooth. I already did jacked it up and rolled the tires over and over - no apparent problem.

Check your UJs for damage, especially the front UJ, and make sure the straps are tight.

I second the u-joint diagnosis. Also check the pinion bearings.

Is it a fast or slow ticking, and does it change with speed?

If you're unsure about the location of the noise, I'd check the front u-joints as well. I just went through this with my 78 F150 and my not-ford truck. It only ticked at speeds above 15-20, and that's what it turned out to be.

Good luck.
