fuel rail crossover

I've been doing what I think needs done the most on my new to me, totally stock truck. Brakes and ball joints...ujoints...6637...money is a problem, so, I need to spread all my other stuff out, but, I don't want to put something really important off. Is the fuel rail crossover a critical item? If not, what is the most critical item? I've been reading 'till I'm almost crosseyed...and I see a lot of good mods. I just don't know how to prioritize them. My goals are longevity and efficiency. I'm don't feel the need for a lot of additional power...not that I'm against it, but not at the expense of durability. What do y'all think?

I think 6637 - Cat delete - B.B. mod (fuel pres). That is the way I started on my 99.

If money is an issue, do the in-tank and pre-pump mods, (hutch) cheap to do, and then do the FRx when your able. These will help with getting the air out of the fuel.

Is the BB mod installing a shimming screw on the fuel pressure regulating spring? What does that do? Increase the fuel pressure? I see the directions, but, there's no narrative to say why and what improves.

If you go with Riffraff's FRx, you will get increased fuel pressure and rid the fuel system of trapped air in the fuel rails of the heads all at once. It will net you a quieter more efficient engine and increase injector life.

You sound much like me. I don't have a need for 1000hp either, just want a good reliable engine running like it should.

You can check my thread for some of the stuff I did to my 7.3 so far. I figure I have everything I want for maintenance and fixes. The last things I want to get are gauges now so I can watch whats going on with a few key items.

The FRx isn't a critical item. That being said, it does keep air in the fuel lines from going through your injectors which will help their long term reliability. It also helps quiet the number 8 injector down. 3 different guys installed them at the NW tech day yesterday and each time I'm impressed by the difference in the sound of the engine.

I focused on getting everything in the powertrain to 100%:
  • No (as in zero) pre-turbo exhaust leaks.
  • Correct readings from all sensors.
  • Air in and out
  • Remove cheezy mods by PO
  • I haven't done the hutch mod yet, but I will drop the tank to see if the PO already did it.
That first one can get costly, but it is a very high priority. After all of the above is good, then you can begin the next phase - upgrades.

First is the "in tank mods" I have seen nearly plugged screens. That will leave you walking if they clog.

Second is the 50 cent mod.. See folks walking from not having this done.

A spare cps.. Have also seen folks walking from not having a spare.

My dads truck is a 2000. Totally stock. . He has had it since new.. All that it has is the 6637 (two years ago) and the "in tank" mods (almost plugged screens) .. And the muffler delete and 50cent mod.( a connector was just about disconnected) That is it. The only issue he has had with it was the orings blew out on the water separator valve and hick up with the transmission and we service and all has been good..

The HPX,6637 and the fuel cross over is just a "thing"
