Fan Clutch

Does the Ole Early 1980's 4.9L I6's Still need the Fan Clutch?? have it hooked up with a stright shaft now and seems to be pulling in Enough air for Cooling one i think i get my Rad Problem Fixed. Was just Curious if Need the Clutch or i could keep it the wa it is now

My understanding of the clutch on the fan is that it decouples the fan from the engine at higher speeds to reduce drag on the crank. You will just lose some efficiency without it. Some guys remove it all together and put an electric fan from a Taurus in there.
