Looking for some help

So i recently swap out a c4 with a c6 in my 63 with a 1978 302 from a f100. Every thing seems to be ok but when i press on the gas it bowgs out and jumps forward and stops jumps forward stops ect. Do i need to turn the mod valve and calibrate it to the 302 some how since the c6 used to be on a 351, or did i miss something simple.

TJ, Do you know if it was operating smoothly in it's donor? Has it setup for a while? How does it shift from a normal start from a stop to 40+ mph?

I did some adjusting on mine when I first got it. My experience with the adjusting it moved shift points up or down.

Was your engine running/working like it should with the C4? Did you pull it and run the C6 in like a few days time?

I'm thinking engine vacuum but hopefully better help will be along shortly.

I'm assuming "bowgs" is a typo for bogs. If so, is it the engine that is bogging down? Is the engine rpm being dragged down as if your truck were tied to a tree?
From what I gather from your post I'm leaning towards a vacuum issue also. Check all the lines from the carb to the modulator. Put a separate line on the modulator and suck into it to see if the diaphragm leaks, if so then you need to replace the modulator.
How big of a carb are you running?

stock carb from a 78 f100. The c6 was sitting for a long period of time. The 302 was good before the switch. I will check the lines right now

Yes the engine boggs down like there are no rpms and then jumps forward, no leaks on the modulator. the carb is a stock two barrel from the 1978 302

TJ, Where did you connect the mod valve vacuum hose to on the engine?

Try disconnecting it and see what happens.

That tranny setting up for a long period could be an issue but shouldn't affect the running of the engine.

And where did you connect the hose to? A vacuum issue with the carb is speaking louder.

Have you relocated any vac hoses?

The intake where it was before never touched it, well on that end. I will take a pic.

Tattyjoe,

I am thinking distributor advance problem.

If you have eletronic ignition it will do this. As the advance moves, it pulls on the wiring, if there is a break in the wiring, it will bog the engine. When the advance returns to original position, the wire reconncts and lets the engine run. I have never see this happen with standard points but it could, more likel by grounding as it advances

If not that distributor advance, I would check for vacume leaks by spraying starting fluid at all connections. It will rev higher when you spray the leak.

Good luck
Dennis

I hate to go down the curvy guessing game road without listening to the engine but I would replace coil and spark plug wires in this case.

Wires will fail under load at high rpm.

Good luck.
