I purchased a 1994 f150 xlt 4x4 off road truck, it only had 94xxx miles and it was 18 years old. well I assumed it had an e40d transmission because the vin was an e code. as i was driving i counted the shifts and I counted five. one more than the e40d was supposed to have. soon after purchasing the truckI replaced the transmission pan seal and filter. The pan wasnt shaped like normal transmission pans but i still found a seal and filter that was marked 1994 obsolete in the database. Im totally confused on what transmission I have in my truck can anyone help?
Yes that's the TC lockup you're counting as a shift, Ford does have a 5-speed auto but it didn't even exist until well into the next centuary after this truck was built and it's not compatable with the engine family in your truck so there is no way someone could have swapped one in.
you are counting the lockup as a gear change, however you still only feel 4 transitions because D already = 1st gear which you will not feel it shift into.
what you'll feel is this:
place selector in D........you'll feel the trans shift for the first time.that will be 1-2.you'll feel it shift again from 2-3.you now felt 2 shifts, but your in 3rd gear see?
next you'll feel lockup.now you felt 3 transitions.2 shifts and a lockup.your now in a much more advanced state than a old C6 trans known as 3rd lock (3rd gear, with a locked up converter- a direct connection between engine and trans.a direct internal clutch of the converter-same state now as a manual trans)
lastly you'll feel the trans shift from 3rd lock, into the trans economy gear; 4th also known as OD.this counts a total of 4 shifting transitions felt.3 actual shifts felt and lockup of the converter.
at no time will you feel as if the E40D is a 5 speed trans..........unless your still lost about the converter, because under load you will notice the converter unlocks and remains unlocked during a downshift for increased rpm pulling power.the duration of which is load sensitive.still doesn't account for your incorrect 5 shift counts on take off though,so try again.
axle code E = E40D.the pan reads: metric.
