parking brake

My parking brake doesn't seem to hold like it should. The brake pads are good, the cables are almost new. The cables are adjusted equal. I have to really stand on the pedal to hold the truck on the slightest grade. The pedal doesn't go to the floor either. I have a 77 f150 that only had one cable on the rear and held more..... Anything I can look for????

Are the rear brakes adjusted like they should be? It sounds to me like they're loose. Jack the truck up and with the transmission in neutral, spin the wheel. Take the plug out of the back of the drum backing plate and adjust the brake adjuster until the brakes just start to drag. Then stop and do the other side. The brakes don't self adjust so you have to do this periodically.

The brake are adjusted. It definately holds more forward than backwards. Its not that they dont hold at all its just that they dont keep the truck from rolling on a slight grade. With the wheel off I can put a 16" prybar between the hub and stud and turn it backwards with out a whole lot of effort. Forward it has alot more resistance.

Okay, well I guess I don't know then every time I have had any issue with mine it has been due to the fact that the brakes were not adjusted right. I usually adjust the brakes to the point where it just starts to get difficult to turn the wheel by hand and then quit. There is a fine line on the adjustment between not enough and too much. There isn't a lot of movement in the emergency brake pawl so if they are just a little too loose it won't hold.

The brakes will always slip more to the back because of the self adjusters allow the brake pads to move to adjust.

If they are not holding forward, they are not adjusted right.

It was adjustment. I had them that the pads where dragging some but I guess they needed more. I didn't want to make them to tight. Never had any trouble with any of my other trucks. I did take notice that the adjuster teeth are rounded over pretty good so that dont help the self adjusting. Not that they work a 100% to begin with. Thanks for the help!

Glad you got it. I usually have to just adjust mine. They don't seem to self adjust worth a darn. Not a big deal though as long as the adjuster screws aren't froze up.

If the teeth on the adjuster wheel is rounded up bad, the wheels wont auto adjust like they are supposed too.

I always wondered what people though of me driving around old neighborhood backwards hitting the brakes every 10 feet to adjust.

The biggest problem when adjusting during install is the wheel cylinders are going to relax when you start again and that throws them back out of adjustment.
