I'm starting to go through my new to me truck...new rotors/pads, new flex brake lines, new ball joints...and I'm thinkin' this dog is a lot bigger dog than my old '90 f250 was and they're both gvwr'd at 8800 lbs! It just doesn't make sense...to me. what's the deal? A lot more power...much more capable brakes...bigger, stronger frame, more robust drive train. Maybe one of you smart guys can clue me in as to why this rig shouldn't have a 10k or 12k gvwr...or a combined gvwr around 20k? While I'm at it I noticed my drive line lash is in the rear end. I can turn the drive shaft about an eight of an inch, freely, before the rear wheels turn. Is this a problem and how does one fix it if it is? Thanks for reading my musings.
There are many different factors that play into determining the gvwr of vehicles. The Frame, axles, brakes, Wheels and tires. This truck may seem bigger and stronger but when all the specs are plugged into the huge equation they come Jt to the same gvwr
Yeah, it's generally accepted that Ford over shot the mark when the Super Duty line was released back in '99. Many believe they have spent the following 10 years trying to backwards engineer these trucks to be less robust while still satisfying market expectations. One look at the interior plastic parts in the new trucks tell the story pretty well.
I hope you enjoy your truck, they can be quite useful and even a bit of fun.
Thanks for the replies. Glad I don't have to try to jack with that differential. As far as enjoying my new to me truck...I'm as in love with it as one can be with an inanimate object. It's just a nice, nice truck. I suppose if I had more funds a newer, more powerful, more comfortable truck it would be nicer, but, for my budget...this is the creme d' creme.
This era SD was the same truck for a 250 or 350. The only difference is the sticker and a 2 inch taller block in the rear of a 350. So you guessed really close, 9900 GVWR and 20k CGVW. Unfortunately there there is no way to legally raise the 8800 lb limit, but the CGVW is the same for both trucks and isn't a legal rating anyway.
My truck is a 2000 with 111000 miles. Well, I thought I had put all the stuff in my sig, but....anyway, I greased the driveshaft spline and the ujoints gotta go. I guess I'll haf'ta do the carrier bearing too. Got the big air filter[6637] on today, also. I starting to get tired of crawling around under it all day...oh well. Sooner or later it'll all be done. I've finished the rear axle...new rotors, pads and brake hoses..
