Any of the major brand name oils will be fine. There's a very good chance that most of the generic sounding ones will be too. I've tried Rotella, Rotella Synthetic (when it went on sale for the same price as dino), Delo, Delvac, Valvoline Premium Blue, Carquest brand (private labeled valvoline oil) and had them all tested by Blackstone.

All of them work just fine. If you pay attention, you'll find your motor sounds or smells different with each oil at different mileage. None of these will hurt your motor. It's just up to you to find the one your motor seems to like the best.

^^^ agreed. It is hard to make an oil meet CJ-4 and not be a pretty good oil.

You would be surprised how you can get a bad oil while trying not to, though, especially with local independent oil distributors who sell "house brand" oils to their accounts. I've seen reports where "house" oils are generally very low in TBN (and borderline on other things), and have seen some reports where the "house" oil has had TBN values as low as 2-3 (as opposed to good values of 8+) which means that it is going to really be a struggle for that particular oil to resist premature oxidation resulting from the acidic combustion by-products which will migrate down the cylinder walls into the oil sump.

That said, as long as you avoid "house brand" oils, your CJ-4 rating should take care of you as long as you're not trying to do extended drain intervals. If you want extended drain intervals, then you'll need to take a few additional things into consideration and make a little more of an investment into your oil changes.

I agree with F250, a High TBN in the beginning, will give you a decent TBN at change time.

As I recall Caterpillar always wanted oil with a TBN of 10 for their engines.

Here is some good reading. Do I Need a TBN?
