Hot temps + Reminder!!! = PSA

The weather is heating up!
Temperatures are rising. Nearing 100°, here.

Stay hydrated!!!!! Drink lots of water!!!
(Squeeze in a slice of lime or lemon for a little 'kicker' to the water! It aids in quenching thirst. Especially lime.)

Don't drink alcohol in the hot sun. It impairs your ability to recognize de-hydration.

Stay safe.

One last thing -

One more thing. If you're sweating buckets and drinking lots of water, don't neglect the electrolytes, lest you fall into a chemical imbalance.

Depending on what I'm doing, I drink anywhere from all Gatorade to a quart of Gatorade for every 2 quarts of water.

Great reminder Keith!

Another thing to remember for us outdoor workers is if you can cool your wrists and or the back of your neck, you can lower your body's core temperature in sweltering heat.

I recommend a chilly pad from FroggToggs: http://www.google.com/aclk?sa=l&ai=C...gsRaingear.com or alcohol wipes, etc.

I know alot of Mexicans around here buy beer, etc and drink it while they work in the fields...don't know how they do it.

And for moquistoes, find a wax mrytle bush and rub it on your skin or break off a limb and put it on ya if you don't have repellant. It helps some as well.

Good idea Tim.

I keep a washcloth and a bottle of Witch Hazel.
It's not as astringent as alcohol and doesn't burn or dry out your skin as much.

You can buy the Gatorade powder and mix it as strong as you like.
When I go up on the roof in this kind of heat and humidity I freeze a bunch of 1/2 Liter bottles the night before.
They will last all day in the cooler and thaw faster than you can drink them if left out.

If you use the Gatorade powder (I've used probably tons of it over the years), one tip for better tasting mix is to dissolve the powder into boiling water at about 4 times the normal strength, then dilute it down to the strength you want with cold water and ice. It tastes much, much better that way because the powder fully dissolves, which I've found it doesn't do if you just mix it into cold water (but that's what I have to do when I'm on a supported bike ride, so I'm also used to that).

As long as I'm drinking plenty of other fluids, I've found that a few beers really don't affect me much in the heat--and I'm talking 2-3 "real" beers, not the goat p!ss made in St. Louis and Milwaukee.
