Howdy, i'm new here an all, but anyways... i have a 63 Ford F250 with a 292. I just took apart the heads and rebuilt them put everything back together, but now the truck won't start.
It started before the tear down, even though it was running on 6 cylinders. Now it will only turn over with starter fluid. I've got pressure coming out of the fuel pump, i do have spark, and the gas is good. i'm not sure what else to look into now. Any suggestions?
Welcome to FTE. When you say it will only "turn over" with starter fluid, does that mean it will only start with starter fluid? If so, and if it runs ok on starter fluid I would start by checking for vacuum leaks and or the condition/adjustment of the carb..
@Smithriver: the truck will run off the starter fluid. i only have one vaccum line and its good...the only thing thats starting to bug me is the carb base gasket...i couldn't find a parts house that had it so i just used the same one for the time being.
@f5fordgirl: its not but i can't adjust them due to the rocker arm adjustment nuts breaking off when i try to adjust them.
Different thickness head gaskets are going to change your tappet settings, so if the new ones are thinner than the old ones, some of the valves may not be closing all the way.
If the truck will idle ok with the starting fluid, you have a lean condition,( not enough fuel mixed with the air). Try backing the air/fuel adjusting screws out a turn or two on the carb and see if it will idle on its own. Also try spraying your starting fluid at the carb base gasket, if it causes the truck to idle ok when sprayed there you may have a leak at the base gasket.
Well me an on of the regulars at my work came to the conclusion that the carb gaskets are leaking, thus not sucking in any gas...so i've got that covered.
Next question is the valve adjustment...is there supposed to be a tool that goes in to the adjustment nut (like a rod)? The last bolts crushed in when torque was applied.
