Bought a Chevy

Ok, Ok, Ok, before ya'll start hatin' on me. I still have my '88 Crew Custom (150k miles), the problem is the leaky fuel tank, rear end growling, power steering pump is done, the gauges are all whacked and the C6 won't pull my boat over 60. I want to take some vacations this summer and my wifes '99 Suburban (250k miles) is having front end issues so I decided to buy a '95 Burb (142K miles) with a 6.5l. It's tight and should make it through the summer, I hope.

Now this puts me at a cross roads. I do love my F350 but like I said it has issues. I paid $1,500 for it and almost immediately put $1,000 tranny in it. The stuff I mentioned above is starting to look like another $1,000 minimum. If I put this dough in it, I'll have to keep it to get my money back. After I put this money in it, I really need to add a gearvendors ( or 5speed) and convert the A/C or risk a mutiny on a road trip.

What should I do ? Other than insurance, it's not costing me anything to let it sit while I decide, but I need to make a decision by the Fall.

I've enjoyed all of the stories and info from the crew here and really don't want to start a Ford vs. Chevy tirade.

If you like the truck and can afford it, I say fix it. I love my F250 and its not really worth much more than scrap right now but that aint stopping me from redoing the whole thing. Course I dont plan on ever getting rid of it lol. Guess you could call it a long term investment

John, I agree, these trucks are good long term investments. They are (hopefully) grandfathered in as reliable workhorses, but so were steam engines. I wish I knew what the future 10 years from now would look like. Trucks like these could fetch or earn top dollar. Scrap prices keep going up, so that's a plus for keeping it.

Yea I would hate to see these engines outlawed or being forced to be outfitted with DPFs and the like. Their in for a helluva fight if they try to take my IDI away from me. Just ask my ex gf how it was when she tried to get me to sell my IDI lol

Thats my big worry with my 79. I get the IDI, i get emissions exempt... but for how long? One of Obamas campaign deals was getting 10+ year old cars off the road, after the house and senate we got cash for clunkers... how bad is the next one going to be? Im just waiting for them to make a law that any car/ truck over 'x' years old or cant hit 'x' emissions gets the axe. Everybody plays kiss *** to the tree huggin hippies... but what about the tree choppin, coal rollin people who actually work and keep this country goin.

Anyway.. welll sorry about the rant, but as someone whos opinion matters little to nothing, i say keep it. I love my truck.. i love working on it just as much or more. 5spd swap isnt hard to get done, rerends are cheap and would be a great opportunity to change gear ratio, PS pump, and fuel tank, are a bill and a good afternoon to fix up. Cheaper than fixing the IFS in a chevy by any means. During my time as an alignment tech.. never more alignments and problems than with a chevy IFS. Theyre okay for about 100k then its part after part after part, they dont hold alignment, they eat tires, CV problems... theyre just too light duty / under built.

I have never owned a Chevy truck

Well, the 88 Isuzu pup almost qualify as a Chevy maybe, being that Isuzu made a motor for the LUV truck I think so they must've been in bed together at some point...

Anyway- compared to the weak Chevy the 6.9/7.3 IDI's are the AK-47 of American diesel trucks.

Mine can eat several different fuels, and does so on a daily basis sans modifications...

No Chevy could run on the stuff I put in my tank
I doubt any Cummins could either...

But, having said all that I would burn down the Chevy till it died and then fix the Ford..
I always liked the big Suburbans!
I should get a older Suburban and put a 7.3 Stroke in it
