I am in process of a head gasket job, I can't remember which bolt holes to put the engine hoist points that are bolted the the intake manifold. Could someone please hep me, or take the air breather off and post a pic of the intake manifold as it sits. My truck is a 7.3 id istock motor
isn't one also the bottom bolt for the fuel water separator brace which is directly behind the top radiator hose on the pass. side front two manifold bolts?
isn't one also the bottom bolt for the fuel water separator brace which is directly behind the top radiator hose on the pass. side front two manifold bolts? Which would agree with 84-6.9L
Thanks, that was helpful info. Now for a second question, if I took the IP off with the gear attached what's the best way to get it back aligned? Do I have to take everything offf the front of the motor down to timing cover? Or can I , without damage, just move he gear tooth for tooth til its right?
I have three brackets, two are just hoist points, One is a a hoist with a built in nut... the one with the built in nut I am trying to place correctly, I will just place the others diagonal from there. But it doesn't seem to be on the water separator brackets
I didn't know it either, but that is a major no-no on this motor. Fortunately for you, I have the solution. There are still some doubters, but the motor I did this to has been running flawlessly now for about 30k miles.
There is a brace that goes from the top of the water separator mount to the intake manifold. The engine hook you have with the mounting bolt on it goes here.
The hook with the brace removed.
The hook with the brace installed.
Is that what yours looks like? maybe your PO removed the brace?!?
You could probably fab something pretty easily. I personally would not delete any kind of structural item on these engines, it is probably there for a reason!
head gasket job went south, i was told head gaskets, then cracked heads, then found a crack in the block upon further disassymbly. i have bought a rebuilt 7.3idi, with 26000 sine the rebuild. should be in within a few days.
Same thing happened to me. I pulled my motor to do a HG repair, and both heads were cracked. I went through four sets to find two good ones to rebuild. 900 bucks later I had these.
About 5k since the top end rebuild, and she's running like a champ.

Ok like Mac said it is a big no no but before you remove the housing you take the plate off of the front of the IP gear housing then take a straight edge and make two scribe marks, one on either side of the hole in the housing. Turn the crank until the small stud thing on the front of the gear is centered on the on the straight edge and take a picture of it. When you put it back on you just match it to the picture... unless you move the crankshaft then you have to do it Mac's way. I know it doesn't do you any good now but so you know for next time it saves you taking the timing cover off which is a PITA!

Good idea Mac I see how you got your name LOL. I just had to remove the timing cover on mine, what a pain! But I had to remove it beacuse i "f"ed up the gasket when I was removing the waterpump.
