Just wondered if I could get y'all's help with this question. I don't know if I went about asking it the wrong way, in the wrong forum, or maybe it was too wordy. But, it's been there for about a week and with over 120 views and still no answer. I thought about posting it in the 4WD forum but thought I'd try here since y'all were so helpful in the past and said you didn't mind OT topics.
Getting rid of the highboy steering setup is very common. That however is hacked up as bad or worse than mine. I've got a 150 box on mine now mounted on the outside of the frame. I've got a homemade link on it now where it hooks from a 2" dropped pitman arm to the spot on the passengers side where the power assist ram used to hook. To do it right I need to make it "crossover" style of steering. It's not the best for sure.
The bearing part however, I'm no help on. So actually I was probably no help whatsoever.
I'm not a lot of help on the parts, but could you just call the distributors you're working with, tell them what you have and see if they can get you the correct parts? If they have someone there who knows these trucks, they should be familiar with what you need and be able to at least tell you if there is, indeed, a difference between the 4x4 and the 4x2. That's about the only suggestion I can make.
I have a 76 high boy that I re did the steering on it 20 years ago ..
I used a steering box from a 3/4 ton chevy & a rag joint & half shaft from an olds cutlass.
After I joined FTE I posted my repair in the 73-79 section when some one was looking to fix theirs .. A few there decided my solution was a hack job .. & said so .. Ironically , it has been in place for 20 years with no issues & it steers like a car ,even with a plow on the front ..
It cost a little over a $100.00 to do ...
I have been here since 06 & The only members I have blocked ,are from that forum ..
I ordered the bearings etc. for the '71 from C&G Early Ford. When they get here I'll be ready to replace the steering wheel and horn ring and the turn signal cam. I'll let y'all know if it works out.
