Does anybody know exactly how the automatic roll-down on the drivers' window works? Is it something in the switch, or is it something inline between the switch and the motor? I'm thinking about modifying a Bronco to roll the windows down automatically, and if it's in the Explorer switches, I may adapt those to work in the Bronco. Thanks.
Bigric, I've been curious about this myself, so I looked it up. The "One touch down" control is not in the switches. It's controlled by the GEM (generic electronic module) located under the middle dash on equipped vehicles.
When the GEM senses a switch push of less than .4 seconds, it activates the one touch down relay, and the window goes down. If the switch push is more than .4 seconds, the window goes down manually with the switch activation.
You will need a wiring diagram and the GEM module to retrofit it in another vehicle. (It appears that the "one touch down" relay is part of the GEM) It's a nice option, but I don't know about the amount of work involved.......
The "one touch down" feature of your driver's side window is controlled by your GEM (Generic Electronics Module). In other words it is a small computer that controls your power window along with your heated backlight and mirror timer, windshield wiper control and interval timer, Rear Interval Wiper Control, Chime Warning, Battery Saver, Courtesy Lamps, Interior Lamp Relay, Panel Dimmer Switch, Remote Anti-Theft Personality (RAP) Module, Delayed Accessory, One-Touch Window, Two-Step Unlock, GEM Diagnostics & Diagnostic Instructions. It would be extremelly difficult to adapt the GEM to be used in your Bronco.
Thanks for the information. It looks like it's a more difficult conversion that I first imagined, but not totally unworkable. Now I just need the wiring diagram for the GEM. I'm sure I can find that quite easily.
If I recall correctly, when I purchased mine they had a unit that worked on one switch and another unit that worked on two switches. It appears that they only have one model now. I'd give them a call and find out if you can operate more than one window with the unit.
It turns out that in the 2nd generation Taurus the "express down" feature is controlled by a module connected to the switch in the driver's door. The modules can be removed and wired up to just about any electric window switch. I picked up a single module for $15 shipped on Ebay today, so if everything goes well, I'll be buying several more so that even my rear window rolls down on its own.
Thanks for yalls help. It's been a few years since I've owned an Explorer, but the hospitality in this forum is great.
