Coolant Temp Gauge

Hey gang, been a while sine I have been on the site. I have a problem I cannot figure out. The water temp gauge quit working. I replaced the sensor after breaking the damn clip. It is on and a snug fit. I will replace the plug clip later. Still, I have no coolant temp. Any idea where to check next?

The coolant temp gauge is worthless anyway. Do you know anyone around with a scanner that can read live data? I'd say start by figuring out if it's a sensor / wiring issue or just the gauge itself. If the scanner can see the changing coolant temps (likely won't be accurate), then the problem could be in the gauge itself.

Well since you have a manual transmission, did you get the correct sender? They are different from the auto to the manual transmission. The auto's get a temperature reading directly to the instrument cluster. The manual trucks get routed through the PCM.

If the sender is good, you may find that you have a broken wire or a bad gauge in the cluster.

Thanks gang. There is no one near me that can read the truck live unless I go to the stealership and with no job at the moment, that is out of the question. Is there a fuse that controls the gauge? Since this has happened, there is something drawing down the batteries. After four days, I have to do a mini charge just to start it. Any ideas would be great. I have to get the truck running. The Vic decided to cough up her coolant and I think she cracked her head when doing it.

You could always check the sensor manually. The sensor is basically just a resistor, with a volt meter you can measure the resistance and see if the sensor is functioning.

I have checked everything that I can and still no go. Anymore ideas. I cannot afford a trip to the stealership.

You dont really need the gauge. Get an aftermarket one if you want to monitor the coolant temp. A dead gauge is just as helpful as the gauge was 3 months ago when it was "working"

They dont do much.
