will a dirty fuel filter create a rapid loss of MPG? I recently installed a new tymar type intake, and then reset my computer. A day later i checked it, and was getting about 3MPG lower than the last few weeks. I am almost at 10,000 miles for the fuel filter, and know it is about time to change...could this be the source of the MPG loss?
02superstroker Is your reduced mileage due to your heavier foot because of the increased performance of the tymar I guess I am fortunate my overhead computer is always right on with mpg etc.
cookie88-you will loose 2mpg if you need an oil change? Any ideas why that type of mpg loss just because of dirty oil
no.. actually when i saw the readings i made a point to back off of the old gas pedal... Seems like highway driving hasn't dropped, however city stop and go has greatly decreased.. i will replace fuel filter tomarrow and see if that helps? thanks
I asssume it's because the anti foaming agent gets used up and the injectors lose alot of effenciency, but that's just a SWAG.
All I know is it's always the same. Between 3500-4500 miles on dino oil, and at around 7000 on synthetic, I'll drop from 17's to 15's. Change the oil and it's right back to 17.
My '96 truck also demands clean oil, or it will loose mileage. I have noticed if the level drops to a couple of quarts low, the mileage plummets. I have no idea why it does this, but find it useful - if I forget to change the oil, the truck reminds me in the pocket.
i was just reminding..or asking..im not sure which.. but i just changed my oil one thousand miles ago..i was asking about the FUEL filter, and if this could be the problem.... thanks
I just changed my fuel filter today , and it was black as hell !
I did it more out of bordem than anything , thinking it would be good still due to me replacing it not that long ago (not sure about mileage wise ) , but to my surprise it was black.
Truck runs allot smoother now with the new filter. And I have allready seen a slight rise in the MPG dept.
I have looked into a pre-filter , but for the money , and the "hook-up" I have from my friend that works at a Ford dealer , i cant justify the cost of adding it to my truck...
Gotcha. I don't have any of the factory strainers left in my tank, so I needed something to protect the pump. I put enough filter in that I could remove the stock filter alltogether if I were so inclined (I'm not).
