What is a gearvendor under/overdrive install. In the hopefully near futur I plan on buyin a 7.3 PSD and I know how the trannys can be. Just wondering what i will need to do to keep it from failing. What is it, and its cost and other things to help the tranny and such from failing. prolly try to get a 5 or 6 speed. thanx latr
As far as what I have seen in magazines and so on , a gear vendors is almost like a second transmission , that goes behind the main trans, that add's extra gears.
I am sure the install couldn't be all that hard , but the driveshat will have to be shortened in order to clear the gearvendors unit.
Good Luck with your project if you deciede to tackle it !
Oh I'll tackle it, it'll just take me alil while. Does anyone know what the price is on one? What do you have to do to the tanny to keep it from failing and what is the cost of it? latr
Heat is a transmissions worst enemy. Change the oil regularly, install a heavy duty transmission cooler and a guage to keep an eye on the temps. Don't run it over 200 degrees for any long period of time. Cost of a cooler will run between $100 - 300 depending on which one you want. I have the BD double stacked 12volt fan cooled unit. Cost me just under $300. As soon as I see the temps approching 180-190 degrees I turn on the fan and it never gets over 200.
The Gear Vendors unit is good if you have a 2 wheel drive unit, as it fits last in the drive train, before the shaft. If however, like me, you have 4 wheel drive, you need the US Gear variety, that fits on the back of the main tranny, before the transfer case, so giving you overdriven, or underdriven ratios whilst in 4 wheel drive. The cost of the unit is $1600 for a Ford application and can be attached in 4 hours, Both drive shafts need altering, the rear shortened, and the front lengthened. The main benefit is the ability to happily tow a full load in a ratio higher than 1:1 - drive (over) is an overdrive, with overdrive (over) being a double overdrive.
Couple the benefit of the aux tranny with a larger cooler, and your towing experiences will be happy ones. Add a shift kit or shift enhancer to the mix, and you get a transmission system worth having.
