Transmissions

With a 94 you are looking at an E4OD to put into it. An E4OD from any 4WD (this is important because there are 2WD units out there and they will not have the correct tailhousing) F-Series or Bronco with a 4.9L (300), 5.0L (302) or 5.8L (351) will work. You do NOT want an E4OD any older than 94 model year though unless you have documentation that it has been rebuilt. And even then, don't even sniff at an E4OD from 1990. I will warn you, the E4OD is not small nor is it an inexpensive piece of machinery. Rebuilt units can tip the scales at $2600-$3000. Used units are ok, but watch high-mileage units and beware any unit that shows discoloration in the fluid (darkened or brown).

To be on the safe side I would choose only the 95-96. The original owner told me the transmission was rebuilt under warranty recall on my 94. You might get that information from Ford for the one you are looking at.
The transmission may not be the culprit. It could be electrical like corroded connectors, VSS, MLPS, PCM or transmission solenoid pack. Like greystreak92 said look at the fluid color and smell it. Drop the pan and look for metal debris before replacing it. The solenoid pack and 14 qts of fluid would be the most expensive. If you DIY, about $400.
