front hub question

Im not sure so I will ask, I changed out both my front hubs and put about 120-150 miles on the pass and about 30 on the driver side. My Question is when I torqued them i followed the chiltons and haynes manual and did the 55 ft lb they called for. Well I have noticed both of them still have some up and down play in the axles and i can feel a slight vibration in the floor boards. I am assuming thats cause I didnt torque them to the 133 ft lb that I see on here everyone and ford calls for. So my question did I hurt anything by driving with them only torqued to 55 ft lb? Honestly I am not sure so I am wondering if anyone has an experince from this. Thanks

ok I am just a little stumped, I torqued the hubs to 133 ft lb and i can still grab my axles and moved them up and down a little bit. As well as I feel a little vibration in the driver side floor board. Is there supposed to be a little play. I really have nothing to go off of since these hubs were bad when I got the truck

There shouldn't be any play at all.

100% sure its not ball joints. pass side has two new ball joints, and I had tires off, calipers off, it was just hubs. Then I reassembled and still play. No in and out play, Just up and down play ha ha if that makes sense. Everything is new hub assembly, The big seal in the spindle ($50) and the axle seal that rides against the axle tube. So I am looking at the wheel u joints at this moment

U-joint

If your hubs are torqued down, and they are new... ujoints is all that is left if you can move your drive shaft about...

If it is not the ball joints then it has to be the hub bearing assbly. Are you sure you torqued the four studs that hold the hud to the steering knuckle?

yes Im sure I torqued the hub bolts, they are the only four on the inside of the knuckle. The ball joints are brand new and the hubs are brand new. That can only leave u joints left to have the play. Its not obvious play or I wouldn't be questioning them but process of elimination.... Thanks guys for your help

It may be the hub lockers, they are the only support for the outer axle shaft,if they get worn it would cause some play.

I was thinking that, as well as hopeing against this because they are warn lockers and to my understanding the only way to know if that is the problem would be to swap them out. But I have held the axle half that goes to the knuckle and still be able to move the axle in the tube so Im more apt to say u joints. I am going to change them out sat, so lets hope for the best

I may be wrong, and I have been many times, but if the front hubs are unlocked and you are getting a vibration, the front axles should not be turning, and therefore not causing a vibration.

you know what, I think you are absolutely right !!!! Now I am seriously clueless as what could be the vibration I feel in the drivers side floor board, as well as to what is still allowing me to move my axle up and down???? I guess I can still change the u joints out since they are prob as old as the truck is

You mentioned that you are feeling the Vibration in the floor board. I have always felt like that would indicate a rear wheel out of balance, or a tight U Joint, or a bad U joint, or center support bearing. As I said, I have been wrong before.

if you put new hubs on, greased them up, and installed the axle correct with the axle snap ring in place my next move would be checking the front u joint too. On my trucks, i've only had to change one so far though but they don't see off road or 4x4 too much. Their expensive little buggers!
