Total noob engine swap ?'s

Well guys I think I want to get a head of the game a little and build and engine to swap out in my F150. What I want to do is have a spare engine ready and waiting. For when my 5.0 is done. Once they are swapped, rebuild the spare, and repeat the process in another 190k.

I have a 94 XLT with a 5.0 with MAS, and I want to get apples for apples. Is there any engine block coding I'll need to know, or will any 5.0 with MAS and OBD1 work? I'm not really looking to turn it into a hot rod. Just a solid daily driver.

Right now the motor runs pretty good, but it's using some oil, it's leaking a little, and I can see that I'm getting some blow by. I also have some coolant usage that I cant track down. No obvious leaks and no white smoke (or any smoke) from the exhaust.

With a 100mi round trip to work I want to be prepared for the inevitable and keep my down time to a minimum. I found some engine swap threads, but it seems like they all have the engine already.

Any 5.0 from 1987 or later is a good candidate but if you want one with the same roller cam that you have now you need a '94+ truck motor. All '87-93 truck motors will have other cams but they can be exchanged for your roller cam so it's not the end of the world if you don't get a later motor. The least desirable 5.0 would be one from a late 80s to early '90s Crown Vic beause of the heads, and if you want a motor with more potential than you have now look for an '87+ 5.0HO from a Mustang, Lincoln Mk7 or Cougar XR7.. these motors had forged pistons and a bigger cam than the trucks, or a '96+ Mountaineer/Explorer 5.0 which had better heads than any of the other motors but the same cam as the '94+ trucks. The intakes from the cars and sportutes are all different but the truck intake will bolt on no problem, and it doesn't matter what EFI system is on the donor vehicle because you won't use any of it on your truck.

So basically I'm looking for everything below the intake, because unless it's coming out of another truck none of it will work?

If I want more potential to modify later, for performance, look for an 87+ HO 5.0L?

And the 96 + explorer / mountaineer, is basically the same as the current truck motor with better heads?

If I'm understanding you correctly.

Thanks for that. I think I'll start hunting for a explorer/mountaineer.
